2010: New Restaurant of the Year Award sponsored by Manitowoc

Winner - Galvin La Chapelle 35 Spital Square, London, E1 6DY

An elegant transformation from Grade ll listed Victorian church hall into glamorous city restaurant has kept Galvin La Chapelle in the spotlight since its opening in Spitalfields last November. Chef owners Chris and Jeff Galvin, who are regularly compared to legendary chef duo Albert and Michel Roux in the press, have given the restaurant an imaginative menu that adds a modern twist to classic French cooking.

The restaurant also features a private area called The Gallery, which is available for exclusive events for as many as 12 people, where guests can sample a set menu food and wine served by their own personal waiter.

Jeff Galvin heads the kitchen at Spital Square where starters include terrine of Landaise foie gras and leeks with truffle vinaigrette, and dishes such as saddle of Denham Estate venison, red cabbage and blackcurrant sauce are served for mains. For dessert blueberry soufflé, coulis and milk ice cream is a tempting option.

The judges thought the food was “all unbelievably good”, one of which thought a dessert of rice pudding with alphonso mangos was sublime.
