Graduate Awards 2013

2013 marks the 11th year of the Graduate Awards exams

These examinations offer chefs under the age of 23 the chance to prove they really are at the cutting edge and are making great strides up the career ladder.

The awards recognise a young working chef’s culinary excellence, testing their knowledge and skills in a series of culinary challenges in a high pressured environment.

Paul Gayler, executive chef at London's Lanesborough Hotel, has been confirmed as chairman of examiners.

The deadline for entries is May 17, after which a select few will be invited to take a regional cooking test at University College Birmingham or the University of West London (UWL) on June 27.

Craft Guild of Chefs National Chef of the Year 2013

Craft Guild of Chefs National Chef of the Year 2013

Calling all chefs to rise to the challenge and enter the Craft Guild of Chefs National Chef of the Year 2013.

Since 2010, one of the competition’s key objectives has been to celebrate the multicultural nature of the UK, with the contest now divided into three categories, Asian/Oriental, Modern British/European and Rest of the World.

The initial paper judging of the entries takes place on May 13, followed by semi-finals at Sheffield College on June 18 and the University of West London on July 2 and 3.

A mentor day for finalists, which invites suppliers to showcase ingredients in a farmer's market-style exhibition and includes workshops, key note speeches and words of wisdom from organisers, chef judges and past competitors, will then be held on September 20.

This year’s winner will be announced at an awards ceremony after the live final at the Restaurant Show at Earls Court in London on Tuesday, October 8.

To enter, chefs must get their ideas down on paper for a three-course lunch menu for four people before Friday, April 19. From the paper judging, 40 successful entrants will be invited to compete in the semi-finals, with eight chosen to go on to the final.

The Craft Guild of Chefs Universal Cookery & Food Festival

The Craft Guild of Chefs Universal Cookery & Food Festival

The final touches are now being put to the programme for the Craft Guild of Chefs 2013 Universal Cookery & Food Festival.

This year’s event will be held at Warbrook House in Eversley, near Hook, in Hampshire, on Wednesday, September 4, and promises to be even better than the inaugural festival last year.

Warbrook, set in 130 beautiful acres of woodland and parkland, provides the perfect stage for what is primarily an outdoor event giving visitors an insight into food from farm to fork, intermingled with a range of indoor activities.

The festival provides an opportunity to see and understand at first hand local food sourcing as well as new cooking techniques.

It will incorporate a farmers’ market with demos in eight main areas: meat, fish, game, fresh produce, cheese, drink, deli and equipment; a main festival area set beneath a magnificent marquee; plus a centre stage that will blend futuristic chef demos with trends and debates from expert speakers, and several sampling opportunities.

Lee Maycock, newly appointed Craft Guild vice chairman and one of the main drivers behind the event, said he had been overwhelmed by the positivity generated by the 2012 festival, and wanted to emphasise that the festival was once again open to all – not just Craft Guild members.

“So put the date in your diary and join us to discover how farmers, food producers, chefs and foodies are uniting to create new opportunities and better solutions for the food we eat,” he said.
