Almost half of Brits eat seafood in the summer, says Seafish

New research commissioned by Seafish has found that almost half of UK adults prefer eating seafood in the summer.

Almost a third (32%) said that they were most likely to have seafood when eating out at a restaurant this summer. And almost a quarter (23%) said they would eat fish when at the seaside.

Other findings showed that fish dishes such as smoked salmon (30%) and tuna nicoise (26%) are more preferred than a roast dinner (7%) during a hot summers day / evening, almost half of UK adults agree that eating fish is more suited to the summer months (44%), and women are more likely than men to agree with this statement (41% vs. 46%).

Meanwhile Londoners are the most likely of all the regions to mainly eat fish when in restaurants (41%), and people in Yorkshire do so when at the seaside (41%).

Commenting on the findings, nutritionist Juliette Kellow, said: "Seafood is one of the healthiest foods around and, with more than 100 different varieties native to the UK and many more imported, there are plenty of ways to eat the recommended two portions a week.

"Seafood is quick and easy to cook.  Most dishes take less than 10 minutes to prepare and it's a great value way to feed friends and family.  With more essential oils, vitamins and minerals per hundred grams than any other major form of protein, seafood represents great value for money.

Karen Galloway, market planning & strategy manager at Seafish, added: "It's easier than ever to get advice from your fishmonger on what species are in season and to ensure that the seafood you buy is sustainably sourced.  From barbeques to steaming, grilling to baking, there's no limit to the number of ways to enjoy seafood this summer."
