Catering outlets in Surrey urged to cut down on fat

A scheme to encourage catering establishments across Surrey to cut down on fat and calories in their food has been launched.

The eat out eat well award was launched at the University of Surrey's Lakeside Restaurant last month.

Trading standard officers are handing out bronze, silver and gold awards based on the type of food offered and the cooking methods used.

The scheme is free and open to all catering establishments that serve the general public. Premises will be considered suitable for the awards following a food hygiene inspection.

There are many benefits to businesses who join the scheme including gaining a public recognition as a responsible business who have not signed up, and having a competitive edge over other businesses who have not signed up.

Councillor Kay Hammond told the BBC: "This scheme is not about being a nanny state, but about giving consumers more choice, and the ability to have healthier options.

"Our scheme will allow consumers to see that there are the choices there should they want them."

The scheme is based on the Welsh healthy options award and is a partnership between Surrey County Council, Environmental Health, Department of Health – South East and Surrey NHS.
