Consumers opt for more premium meat cuts

Despite the credit crunch consumers are opting for more premium meat cuts when doing their weekly shop, with sales of sirloin steak up by over 50%, according to a study by online grocer Ocado.

Figures also found sales of veal escallops soar by 30%.

It's not only premium food that has seen an increase.
These quality ingredients are being washed down with higher value wines, with a 15% hike in consumers paying between £10 and £15 a bottle.

Across the board there has been a 15% rise in sales of cooking ingredients. Chopping tomatoes have shot up 129% and fresh cooking sauces are up by 165%. Meanwhile, ready meals have dropped by 5%.

Other notable changes in the make-up of UK shopping baskets include organic sales sliding to 13% of the average shopping basket in the summer.

In addition, Londoners are filling 17% of their shopping basket with organic produce, compared to 14% nationally.
