David Bann Restaurant wins Vegetarian Society Award

Last night saw over 150 people gather for the Vegetarian Society Awards 2009 in which the David Bann Restaurant in Edinburgh was recognised for the service it offers non-meat eaters.

Held at the Magic Circle Headquarters and hosted by Wendy Turner Webster, broadcaster and author, the awards recognise caterers and manufacturers of products that go a long way to helping veggies lead their lifestyles.

Wendy, a Vegetarian Society patron of over five years, said: "Everyone here tonight works hard all year round to develop, produce, cook, sell or write about products and services that really matter to vegetarians. As the environmental advantages of meat-free living become more and more apparent, Vegetarianism itself has never been more relevant, but if people can't think what to eat then they're not going to change."

David Bann, owner of his eponymous restaurant, spoke to us after the awards and said he simply opened the vegetarian eatery because he is one: "This kind of award is very encouraging for people who run restaurants. More often than not we don't get enough feedback and rely on customers to tell us what tastes good. This award is inspirational and makes us, as an industry, strive further."

Simon Rimmer's Greens in West Didsbury, Manchester took home the prize for Best Non-Approved Catering for Vegetarians.

Vanessa Brown, Head of Corporate Relations for the Vegetarian Society added: "The Vegsoc Approved logo is recognised throughout the world as a mark of integrity as well as a shortcut to choosing products that really are suitable for vegetarians. It was a great night, a showcase for companies and individuals who are passionate about best practice."
