Healthy meals launch at Hungry Horse pubs

The Hungry Horse, Greene King's family-oriented pub brand, is to become the first pub chain in England to offer a free extra portion of vegetables as a part of its new children's menu.

The menu provides four of the recommended 'five-a-day' fruit and vegetables in just one meal. The free extra portion of vegetables applies to all dishes on the menu and is available on request. Children have the option of choosing a portion of peas, beans, salad or carrots to supplement their meal.

The menu is divided into two sections of meals. The 'Pick 'n' Mix' selection offers manageable portions for four to six year-olds, while the 'Larger Meals' are designed for seven to 10 year-olds.

Examples of dishes on the larger meal menu include tomato and vegetable pasta and chicken curry with Basmati rice, and the 'Pick 'n' Mix' selection includes potato, carrot and swede mash.

The menu, now available in all Hungry Horse restaurants in England, also includes a separate nutritional guide with GDAs for each meal.

Jonathan Webster, managing director, Greene King Destination, said: "Our customers want to provide their children with healthy options and as a result are increasingly asking about the nutritional elements of our meals. This menu has been developed in response parents' enquiries and the feedback so far has been fantastic."
