Hot date for chefs

With just weeks to go until entries close on 25 October, chefs are being urged to enter the XXX Mints 'Can You Handle the Heat?' challenge.

The best six chefs will be selected to appear in the final at The World Food Market at ExCel, London Docklands from 26-27 November as part of the 10th National Curry week, which runs from 23-29 November.

Candidates will be expected to make the spiciest possible curry without any 'uncomfortable' side effects for the diner.

Peter Grove, event organiser, went on to explain what else the chefs will be judged on: "We realise the danger in just focusing on the hottest dish, so the title winning dish will not only be very hot but tasty, safe and healthy. We are definitely not looking for a dish to put people in the bathroom or even worse, the hospital. There will be chefs out there who will have a special, sizzling recipe all of their own and we want to taste it."

Grove added: "The main challenge of the event is to assure the judges that they will survive each curry and there will be absolutely no need to check their life insurance policies."

For many years the Curry Hell created by Abdul Latif in Newcastle and now produced by his son Rukon, laid claim to the title of world's hottest curry until recently when chef Vivek Singh from the Cinnamon Club, London, produced his Bollywood Burner.

The purpose of the event and National Curry Week, sponsored by XXX Mints, is to raise money for Oxfam and the less fortunate in the world, especially in South Asia.
