Lecturer at University of Derby wins British Turkey Chef of the Year title

Chef lecturer Robert Stordy has been crowned British Turkey Chef of the Year, beating off stiff competition with his dish of turkey escalope stuffed with sage & vegetable mousse.

Judges said Stordy, who has been a chef lecturer for 17 years, had clearly put a lot of thought and work into his creation, which included meat glazed potatoes, minted broad bean puree and port jus.

Meanwhile a fresh free-range butterfly turkey scooped the Best Catering Product title in the awards for producer Lincs Turkeys. Judges were won over by its moist, tender meat and the no-waste convenience for caterers.

Runners up were the UK Foodhall and Bernard Matthews. The winners were presented with their trophies by TV sports personality Gabby Logan and Catriona Lee, chairman of British Turkey Federation's Marketing Committee, in front of 200 guests and VIPs at Claridge's, London.

Andrew Lewins, chairman of the British Turkey Federation, commented on the contest: "Without our customers' unflinching and growing support and selection of British turkey, we would not be the industry we are. This evening is about celebrating the very best of products which earn that customer support, from traditional whole birds, to innovative preparations, to sophisticated convenience products.

"Whether white, bronze, barn-reared, free-range, all are serving the consumer and offering an unrivalled choice for every palate and every pocket while being underpinned by the most comprehensive welfare and food safety assurance scheme in the world – Quality British Turkey."

The evening also raised more than £5,000 for the children's medical charity SPARKS.
