Top food producers team up to attend British Cheese Awards

Some of the world's top food critics, journalists, food producers and restaurateurs are teaming up at the small Cotswold village of Kingham today (10 July) to take part and attend the British Cheese Awards.

A total 190 cheesemakers will be putting forward nearly 900 cheeses to the judges. Luckily for the judges there is no limit to the number of Gold, Silver or Bronze medals they can award per class but they still have to decide an outright category winner and eventually an overall Supreme Champion.

This year there is an increase in the numbers entered in the Export, Semi-soft and Cheddar categories but a significant drop in the number of flavour added cheeses entered. This is due to a move by the organiser away from the blended cheese and back to the more traditional flavour added. This goes for the Export category with more and more traditional British cheeses finding their way to the market abroad.

Of the cheeses entered 705 are made using cows milk with just eight being made from Buffalo milk, 138 are made with raw milk and 102 are organic.

The winners will be announced at an award ceremony on the 25th September at the National Museum Cardiff which coincides with the 9th Great British Cheese Festival held for the 2nd year at Cardiff castle on 26th – 27th September.
