What makes the perfect Ploughman’s?

Simple, traditional fare is currently enjoying a renaissance, with consumers seeking comfort in the nostalgic resurgence of old culinary favourites. In one corner of England this has rekindled a critical debate – chutney or no chutney?

West Country Farmhouse Cheesemakers are running an official poll to find the nation's favourite formulation of the Ploughman's Lunch and will be charting Britons' preferred taste combinations in an online census.

Cheeselovers can select their ingredients for the perfect Ploughman's from a range of accompaniments including coleslaw, sweet pickle, celery, apple, cottage loaf, red onion, chutney and of course, a wedge of farmhouse Cheddar.

The high-tech 'Ploughmanograph' calculates a personal Ploughman's Profile for everyone who logs on and then calculates the national average.

Those using the Ploughmanograph will also have the opportunity to nominate their favourite Ploughman's purveyor, be it pub, café or restaurant.

Regional finalists will be judged by a panel of experts at the Great British Cheese Festival and the winner announced at the beginning of British Cheese Week on the 26 September 2009.

The closing date for nominations and the prize draw is 11 September 2009.
