Young masterchef inspires catering students

Freelance chef and food writer Sophie Wright recently paid a visit to Middlesborough College to pass on some of her hidden secrets to help inspire the up-and-coming catering students.

Wright, who has already ran her own restaurant, published a cook book and picked up more than 20 national and international cookery awards, gave a masterclass in butchery and fishmongery skills preparing seared scallops and cinnamon and orange roasted pousin, with the help of catering students Scott Brown and Michael McCormack.

The young professional said: "It's only three years since I left college myself and have achieved a lot since but I was always determined to succeed. It's fantastic to come into a college like this with amazing facilities to inspire the students.

"You don't necessarily have to work in a Michelin-starred restaurant to be a success, anything is achievable as long as you give yourself time and make the effort required."

Steve Donnison, senior course co-ordinator for catering at the college, said: "It's great that we can have one of the rising stars of British cooking at Middlesbrough College to inspire our own young chefs.

"She's not much older than our own students but has shown with hard work and self-motivation that you can achieve whatever goals you set for yourself."
