2010: Education Chef Award sponsored by Town & Country Fine Foods

Winner - Norman Robertson Ayr College

With a teaching career that spans 36 years, Ayr College’s section head of food studies Norman Robertson is a very experienced educator with a long history of success that underscores the passion he holds for educating youngsters in the hospitality industry.

Since taking on his role at the college in 1986, he has involved his students in activities ranging from competitions, special functions and dinners to corporate hospitality events. His award winning college teams over the years have won several gold medals in competitions, and for the last two years the college has been Brakes Team Challenge UK winners.

His contribution to further education is shown in his commitment as examiner for City & Guilds of London Institute for the original 152 and the revised 706-3 advanced kitchen and larder exams, a post he held for 16 years.

His most recent development at Ayr College is the completion of the upgrade and refurbishment of all four of its teaching kitchens at a cost of £500,000, which he was heavily involved in to ensure it offered the highest professional specification.

Described as a “natural leader who staff will follow willingly”, he has led by example, and this was highlighted in his inclusion in the New Year honours list when he was awarded an MBE for his contribution to further education.
