50 eateries to take part in Wigan Food and Drink Festival

Organisers of the Wigan Food and Drink Festival have announced the 15 eateries, bistros and brasseries that will be taking part in the event.

The establishments include Ashfield House Restaurant, The Baby Elephant, Beeches of Standish, Bennetts of Wrightington Hotel, The Crown at Worthington, Gallimores, Haigh Hall, Laureates of Kilhey Court Hotel, The RBG at the Park Inn – Leigh and The Ross Arms – Astley.

The main aim of the festival – soon to be in its third year - is to change perceptions and make it clear that there is more to Wigan than pies and pastries.

Keith Bergman, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust's tourism manager and festival organiser, said: "We are very proud of our food heritage and pies are very much a part of the past and, indeed, the present. However, there are a growing number of quality restaurants in the borough, with many talented chefs at the helm, and this is our opportunity to celebrate this and move away from the 'pie capital' title."

Hazeldene, managing director Simon Ball, added: "The number, variety and quality of restaurants within a town symbolizes its positioning and there is no doubt that here in Wigan Borough the restaurant sector and the quality of the establishments is growing and competing at a higher level.

"This is great news for the town as it not only caters for the local residents, but also attracts more visitors to the town, providing an eclectic mix of eateries that will suit all tastes and palates."

The Wigan Food and Drink Festival takes place 4th – 14th March 2010.
