A traditional roast voted number one Brit dish

A massive 73% of UK food lovers have revealed that a roast dinner tops their list of traditional Brit dishes, according to a recent poll conducted by Toby Carvery.

Julia Mosedale, marketing manager for the Toby Carvery restaurant chain, said: "Great British cooking is certainly back on the menu so this survey could not have been timelier. There are not many people who don't love a good roast, but it's great to hear that so many people regard it as the best British dish.

"Not only is it delicious, it's a great way of getting your five a day in one sitting, by piling your plate with lots of fresh vegetables. This result shows that a mouth watering roast dinner can be enjoyed any day of the week, so why wait until Sunday?"

The full English breakfast claimed second place as 14% of voters fancied a fry up as their favourite national dish, meanwhile fish and chips bagged the bronze with 6%, followed by beef stew and dumplings (3%) and a tie for fifth place between steak and kidney pie and bangers and mash.

The traditional Scottish favourite of haggis was least popular with just 0.2%.
