BaxterStorey's CEO explains importance of training in the catering sector

At the third annual Chef Academy graduation, Alastair Storey, chief executive of caterers BaxterStorey, last night explained to colleagues from across the catering sector, the importance of training.

Talking to 150 people from across the industry, Alastair Storey said: "We know that without a strong, fully trained workforce our business cannot achieve its full potential. Our investment in training is central to our promise of delivering the best food at work to our clients and customers."

Alastair Storey was speaking at the annual event held to celebrate the success of chefs graduating from BaxterStorey's award-winning Chef Academy training programme. The evening saw 37 of the company's chefs graduate, an increase of over 70% on the previous year.

A further 45 chefs at BaxterStorey have begun training on this academic year's programme which commenced in September. In May 2009 the company launched its Barista Academy through which more than 350 staff have already completed training.

Alastair added: "I cannot remember a tougher economic climate and it is not easy for young people to get jobs, let alone good training. However they are our industry's future and it is important to continue to invest in training and development – both of which produce more skilful and efficient teams. We are very proud of their commitment, dedication and enthusiasm."

World renowned three Michelin star chef, Heston Blumenthal, presented the graduates with their awards on the night.

He said: "Motivation, perseverance and commitment to excellence are key characteristics for successful chefs and all of those graduates tonight have displayed these traits in abundance. 

"The Chef Academy is a fantastic programme that encourages excellence by allowing chefs to acquire a solid base of craft skills and learn new techniques that underpin their entire career."
