Chefs cook up cake Cymru for international culinary event

The growing popularity of sugarcraft and cake decorating has persuaded the organisers to introduce a new Cake Cymru show at next year's Welsh International Culinary Championships.

The championships, which are held over three days from February 23-25 at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru, Rhos on Sea, are organised by the Welsh Culinary Association (WCA) with sponsorship from the Welsh Assembly Government to promote the food and drink industry brand 'True Taste'.

Cake Cymru is the brainchild of Welsh National Culinary Team member Sally Owens, who is a WCA board member and lecturer at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru.

"Sugarcraft has really taken off in the UK, which is illustrated by the growth and popularity of Cake International at the NEC in Birmingham in November," explained Sally.

"We are trying to capitalise on this growing interest by establishing Cake Cymru as part of the Welsh International Culinary Championships. We are encouraging entries from across the UK and there is no stipulation about work not having been shown before.

"There will be eight classes, including one for competitors aged 16 and under, and an overall champion. We are now busy seeking sponsors for this exciting new show, which we hope will attract lots of interest."

The championships also include the Battle for the Dragon contest, with the Welsh National Culinary Team taking on two invited national teams over three days. Each team is challenged to cook a three-course meal for 80 people under the watchful eyes of a panel of experienced international judges.

Tickets for each of the lunches will soon be available for £21 a head or £20 a head when booking for all three days. As an extra incentive for next year's event, parties of 10 who book for lunch will receive one ticket free.
