FSA introduces food allergy training

A new interactive food allergy training tool has been developed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) offering practical advice to local authority food law enforcement officers and anyone wanting to learn about food allergy.

The tool is split into a number of sections. Users can test their knowledge before getting the answers on a number of allergy issues, including a quiz designed to highlight allergenic ingredients in Indian, Italian, Chinese and deli-counter dishes.

Users can also click on an interactive human body that describes the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

The training focuses on the importance of how food packaging should be labelled and will help food manufacturers and retailers reduce the risk of having to withdraw or recall a product due to incorrect allergen labelling.

It also highlights the need for caterers to double-check ingredients when asked to do so by customers.

In addition, allergen control checklists are available for download for enforcement officers carrying out inspections of manufacturing and catering premises. These outline the procedures that should be followed when dealing with possible allergenic ingredients.

The training does not have to be completed in one sitting. It is possible to take a break and resume learning at a later date.

Completing the course can count towards enforcement officers' Continued Professional Development (CDP) training, supported by an FSA certificate.

The site will be exhibited at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health conference, which is taking place from the 29-30 September.
