Michelin-starred chef buys first venture

Gareth Thomas, formerly at Michelin-starred restaurant Auberge du Lac, has bought his first restaurant in North London.

Agents Christie + Co sold the Rose & Crown pub for an undisclosed sum off an asking price of £139,000.

Situated on Highgate High Street, the period terraced property is one of the oldest pubs in North London and was frequented so often by royalty in the 17th and 18th Centuries that the back bar was famously dubbed the "Royal Box".

The main trading area comprises 40 covers and a bar. The property, which is held on the remainder of a 20-year lease, also benefits from a 50-cover garden at the rear plus four-bedroom owner's accommodation.

The Rose & Crown is the first venture for Gareth Thomas, who trained under celebrity chef and restaurateur Jean-Christophe Novelli at the Auberge du Lac at Brocket Hall in Welwyn, and under Gary Rhodes at Rhodes 24 in the capital.

Daniel Arnold from Christie + Co's Enfield Office said: "We were delighted to have sold the leasehold of the Rose & Crown to Gareth who has already carried out a sophisticated and contemporary refurbishment of the site, which now incorporates an intimate restaurant and a separate bar for those that just fancy a drink. He is looking to create a fine dining experience which will attract both local customers and those from further afield."
