Modern apprenticeships in hospitality set to double

The Scottish Government is to double the number of modern apprenticeships in the hospitality sector by opening it to all ages of applicants.

This follows an announcement earlier this year to make all-age support available for the Professional Cookery Framework and provides increased skills support for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector across Scotland.

The decision to open this modern apprenticeship scheme to adults is part of ScotAction - the Scottish Government's skills support package to help support Scotland's economy out of recession and back to economic growth.

The number of apprenticeship opportunities in the hospitality sector will be increased by at least 300, as people of all ages can now apply for this apprenticeship, with a further 200 individuals engaging in Professional Cookery training.

Cabinet secretary for education and lifelong learning Fiona Hyslop said: "Apprentices are vital for Scotland's for recovery. That is why the Scottish Government announced a huge increase in funding of £16 million for 7,800 new apprenticeships this year."

"Over the next few weeks I will be announcing further support through ScotAction to help employers recruit and retain apprentices. The action we take now will ensure that our workforce for the future are skilled so that they can contribute to Scotland's future economic success and help it recover from the current downturn."
