Top chef backs Fork2Fork campaign

James Sommerin, executive head chef of the Crown at Whitebrook restaurant in Wales, is backing the newly launched Fork2Fork pledge which aims to encourage buying food direct and local.

Sommerin explained his reasons for supporting the scheme: "I fully support the fork2fork pledge campaign. I endeavour to source local products whenever and wherever I can. Wales overflows with a wealth of fantastic home grown produce of world class quality.

"I am constantly amazed and astounded at the range and variety of meat, fruit, vegetables and superb cheeses that I am able to source locally for the the kitchens and ultimately the tables at The Crown at Whitebrook and also our sister restaurant the three AA rosette Crown at The Celtic Manor Resort."

The campaign team behind the fork2fork pledge will be travelling the country over the coming weeks encouraging consumers to pledge to support their local producer through buying direct.

The pledge can also be signed online via www.fork2fork.org.uk. Those signing the pledge will not only receive regular news updates from the campaign but will automatically be entered into a monthly fork2fork prize draw.

Campaign spokesperson Meilyr Ceredig added: "The pledge is about getting people to stop and think about how and where they shop. There are many benefits to buying direct from the producer themselves. With farmers' markets, farm shops, farm gates, box scheme springing up all over the country, the opportunities of buying direct are ever increasing. People need to make the connection between fresh local foods and the local farms and producers that supply them.

"Farmers markets, farm shops, box schemes play a critical role in keeping farmers on the land, and by providing them with a venue where they sell their much sought after fresh produce. It's one of the best ways to keep the countryside farming and save the land that sustains us."
