Top chef Phil Vickery backs I Love British Turkey campaign

Top chef Phil Vickery along with badmington Olympic silver medalist Gail Emms and nutritionist Fiona Hunter are backing a campaign which launches today to persuade people to eat more turkey all year round.

Emms will be highlighting the benefits of eating turkey, especially for those with young families, while Vickery will show just how simple it is to cook. Meanwhile Hunter will showcase the difference in saturated fat when comparing turkey with other meats.

Visitors can meet Emms and try Spaghetti Bolognese made with turkey mince rather than beef mince – a saving of over 50% saturated fat – meaning that you can eat two portions of Spaghetti Bolognese made with turkey that equals the same saturated fat as one portion made with beef.

She said: "As well as turkey breast being low in saturated fat which is great news, there is the added bonus that turkey tastes so delicious! And you don't have to stop at Spaghetti Bolognese. I love turkey all year round in stir fries, lasagne, on the barbecue, in casseroles – and of course, turkey sandwiches!"

Vickery explained: "British turkey is fantastically tasty – and it's really good for you. My kids love it, and we often spend time at home experimenting with recipes using turkey where you would normally use other meats. Turkey is a fantastic flavour-carrier so perfect for marinating with spices, ready for cooking on the BBQ!"

Hunter added: "Turkey breast meat is low in saturated fat and high in protein, it is also excellent value, especially if you are cooking for a crowd. Plus there are a huge number of ready to cook cuts around, so something for everyone. I love turkey sausages and burgers – ideal for anyone wanting a lower fat alternative to pork and beef."

The campaign will launch at the Trafford Centre in Manchester.
