WKC round-up at Wessex Salon Culinaire

Westminster Kingsway College (WKC) chef student, Iarly Lima has won the Caterer, Licensee and Hotelier Student Chef of the Year 2009 which was held at the Wessex Salon Culinaire in Bournemouth.

Originally from Brazil, chef student Iarly Lima said: "I couldn't believe that I had won this competition. I was in ecstasy as I had worked so hard. I had great support from the chef lecturers and my sous chef, Maddie. I will keep this feeling with me for the rest of my life."

The Westminster Kingsway College Culinary Arts and Hospitality team achieved fantastic results at the Wessex Salon with 15 Best in Class, 18 Gold, 15 Silver, 15 Bronze and 9 Merit awards. In addition the College team were presented with the College award for their achievements in the competition. The College competition team won a range of medals across all categories including the live competitions and the static displays.

Third  year chef student, Liam Kavanagh won a Gold Best in Class for his Two Restaurant Plates, Starters. He said: "I was really pleased to win my first Best in Class award. It took a lot of work over 3 days for this entry and I had to take great care over my presentation skills."

First year chef first majcompetition and won the Gold Best in Class award for in the 'Cold Chicken Preparation Saute' category. Dharam said: "I love being around food and learning about food so the preparation for the competitions was good practice for me. I had to show technical skills in this category and I was competing against 40 other competitors so was really pleased to win."

Simon Stocker, senior chef lecturer at Westminster Kingsway College, said: "We were really pleased with the performance of the College competition team at the Wessex Salon this year and especially with Iarly's performance in the Caterer award competition. The standard of the competition was incredibly high and our student chefs were competing against other colleges and industry-based chefs from hotels and restaurants."
