Call on restaurants to enter Good Business Awards
The RSPCA are calling on restaurants to enter the Good Business Awards which recognise ethical business approaches to animal welfare.
The awards recognise restaurants which set out to source their meat, fish and dairy from providers that maintain high animal welfare, covering living conditions, transport, slaughter methods, labelling and farm inspections.
Entry questionnaires can be downloaded from www.rspcagoodbusinessawards.com or by contacting the RSPCA team on 0870 754 0488. The entry deadline date is 27 June.
All entries will be judged by an independent panel of industry experts. Winners will be given the RSPCA Good Business Awards logo to use on relevant products and in promotions for a year. They will also be promoted on the RSPCA's ethical consumer website.
These awards follow evidence that consumers are increasingly demanding higher standards in the welfare of the food they buy when eating out and at home.
Research conducted by the RSPCA found that recent TV programmes on meat chickens reared in the UK have changed consumer attitudes and have had a direct effect on spending habits.
Three quarters of consumers now buy free-range, freedom food or organic chicken.
Further findings showed that a similar proportion of people see animal welfare (57%), human rights (55%) and protecting the environment (55%) as important ethical factors when buying products.
One of the judges, TV journalist and presenter, Richard Johnson, explained: "Customers want to eat at restaurants that seek out suppliers who care for their animals and kill them with humanity. Restaurants that are doing this, or seeking to, deserve our support and recognition."
The awards ceremony will be held at the Natural History Museum in London on 9 October.
