False local claims found on food products in pubs and restaurants

Written by: Admin
Pubs and restaurants have been found using false local claims on some food products, according to reports.
According to a Local Government Regulation investigation, eating establishments across England and Wales are using inaccurate 'local' claims on some of their products. The survey, which looked at 300 restaurants, retail outlets and food manufacturing premises, found that one in five restaurant descriptions were confusing diners. Council food enforcement officers found that New Zealand lamb, for example, was described as Welsh. Other figures found that 50% of poultry products had false claims as well as sausages at 29%, beef and lamb with 27% and 24% for dairy products. Paul Bettison, chairman of the Local Government Regulation, said that these figures are extremely worrying and that councils are currently working with businesses to put this issue right. He concluded: "At present there is no widely agreed definition of the term `local' and it isn't acceptable. Everyone should be operating in a fair environment and following the same rules."
