News In Brief
Powys county in Wales is to experience a shake-up as Llanidloes hospital's minor injuries unit moves to the town's GP surgery.
Health bosses claimed the unit is no longer viable and this is the third hospital in the county to lose its minor injuries unit. Responding to the decision the local health board said: "Powys Teaching Local Health Board is working with the local GP practice in Llanidloes with a view to transferring the service to the practice. Discussions are ongoing with the practice on when that might take place. Details of the service will be announced in due course and a range of public awareness activities will be undertaken in advance." The Great Western Hospital in Swindon has extended its smoking ban to its grounds. Previously the boundaries of the ban were just a few metres outside the buildings but this has now been stretched to reach the entire hospital ground and car parks. Three smoking areas have been designated for patients, visitors and staff. Signage has also been implemented. North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has gained formal approval to become a University Hospital Trust. This approval has been supported by the Universities of Cumbria and Newcastle, the Privy Council and the Department of Health. It has been given not only in recognition of their current education and training programmes but is an endorsement of those that they will be developing in the future. Health Secretary Alan Johnson has opened a new CT suite at Whipps Cross University Hospital and said at the unveiling: "This is a fantastic unit and I know how highly regarded Whipps Cross is for cancer care." The upgrade, which cost more than £3m sees the previous nine-year old scanner replaced with two new 64 slice scanners which produce highly detailed x-ray scans. These can support early diagnosis and treatment.
