The Restaurant Show goes eco-friendly
A number of exhibitors at this year's Restaurant Show reflect the growing demand for environmentally friendly and ethically produced & sourced products.
Of the 350 exhibitors, a number have a 'green' or sustainable dimension and are continually looking at ways their businesses can help make a difference. The Restaurant Show Manager, Clair Bowman, explains: "We are seeing more and more exhibitors actively looking at ways they can support local communities, deal fairly with suppliers and avoid using unnatural ingredients and processes and lessen their carbon footprint. This year's show is really set to challenge some more traditional ways of doing business."
Cawleys (Stand C09), the waste management and recycling company, will be showcasing its Food Recycling Round at this year's show. The Food Recycling Round collects food waste from restaurants and delivers it to an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant where it is converted into renewable energy and fertilizer. The service can help restaurateurs to save money on costly landfill and incinerator costs, improve their carbon footprint, and demonstrate their impeccable green credentials to customers. FAIR INSTANT (Stand C43) will be launching its FAIR GROUND products to the restaurant and food service industry: for every pack sold a 25 pence contribution goes to Save the Children to help support their education projects in coffee growing countries: already 5,500 children have benefited from this support. M&J Seafood (stand no J40) has grown organically to become the UK's largest independent seafood supplier since the 1990s. M&J Seafood is totally committed to responsible sourcing and supplying the best of the world's catch from well-managed and sustainable fisheries. They source products within UK and International regulatory guidelines, whilst maintaining their commitment to actively promoting greater variety and under-utilised species. As well as displaying fresh fish from its forthcoming British Skipper Scheme, at The Restaurant Show, M&J Seafood will be offering guests freshly shucked Colchester native oysters to celebrate the start of the new season. Arthur Potts Dawson, owner of Acorn House and Water House in London, recently announced that he will be joining the likes of Charles Campion, Jill Dupleix and Jay Rayner in a heated debate on topics affecting the Restaurant industry on The Stage on 7th October at 13.00 in aid of Action Against Hunger. Topics of sustainability and ethical food sourcing are likely to arise. The Restaurant Show 2008 is taking place 6th- 8th October, Earls Court 2 www.therestaurantshow.co.uk
