The Roux family celebrate 45 years of Le Gavroche
This month, the iconic French restaurant Le Gavroche will mark its 45th year of trading; having first opened its doors to the public in April 1967.
The famous Mayfair fine dining establishment, which played host to the likes of Ava Gardner, Charlie Chaplin and Robert Redford on its launch night, was opened by Albert Roux and his younger brother Michel.
The restaurant has been run by Albert's son, Michel Roux Jr, for more than two decades now. At the time of its opening, London's fine dining scene was close to non-existent and the city was far from renowned for its 'haute cuisine'. Le Gavroche marked a turning point, sparking a gastronomic trend that saw a whole new breed of restaurants open up in quick succession. With the dawn of Le Gavroche, the capital's dining scene was set to change forever. In its time, Le Gavroche has played host to prime ministers and presidents, royalty and Hollywood stars. It was the first UK restaurant to be awarded one, two and three Michelin stars and remains high up in the awards and guides to this day; with Le Gavroche having been voted London's 'best all-round restaurant' in this year's Harden's Restaurant Guide, amongst other awards others. Le Gavroche was originally located in Chelsea's Lower Sloane Street but was moved a few years later, to its current address at 43 Upper Brook Street. Michel Roux Jr said: "Over the last forty-five years, many a great restaurant has come and gone, but the fact that Le Gavroche has stood the test of time is testament to its excellence. "Le Gavroche changed so much about eating out, but crucially our principles have remained the same. We always strive for perfection and to maintain the highest of standards, both in terms of our service and food. In my opinion, this is what has kept us loved by customers and critics alike for so many years." The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday, for lunch and dinner, with the exception of Saturday lunchtime.
