Autumn 2008: Welcome

Written by: Admin
Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Stockpot, and I trust most of you managed to take a well deserved break over the summer months.
As in the past there has been much happening in the industry and within the Craft Guild of Chefs recently.

The Culinary Academy, just like our great sporting Olympians going for gold in Beijing, has been preparing itself to go and represent the UK at the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, and we wish them all great success on the world stage.

The Craft Guild, which has attended the last four Culinary Olympics, is also proud of the support by the team's sponsors: Brakes, Electrolux, Essential Cuisine and Gourmet Classics.

The Craft Guild's annual awards night was a spectacular evening in a most impressive venue, where this year's finest were recognised for their endeavours and their achievements. It was a truly memorable event, which we have highlighted in this issue.

Another milestone was Winnie Myers' 90th birthday which was celebrated in style at the London Marriott County Hall hotel with a superb lunch cooked by executive chef Chris Basten and his brigade.

Looking ahead to the Craft Guild Knorr National Chef of the Year, the grand final at the Restaurant Show on October 7 promises to be an exciting climax after semi final cook offs all around the country.

During 2008 we have had many competitions and there are plenty more for our members to be involved in. But do come along and see this grand final, the biggest chef's competition in the UK, and don't forget to visit our stand at the show (stand no. K34). I look forward to seeing you there.

I must also pay tribute to some sad losses to the Craft Guild, in particular the unfortunate death of Ron Collins, a great supporter of the Guild and past chairman of the Surrey Division. Ron was always willing to give a hand, and was often seen manning the stand at many trade shows and events. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The Guild has also seen the loss of Richard Schnyder and Edward Clothier, both longstanding and supportive members of the Surrey Division and they too will be sorely missed.

On a lighter note, there are a host of events to look forward to such as the Graduate Awards and the Combined Services Salon Culinaire, which will be attended by our royal patron the Countess of Wessex. I look forward to seeing you all there.
