Summer 2012 - Welcome

Written by: Admin
Wembley in Olympic year – what a fantastic venue for our annual awards evening where a host of talent came together to recognise so many great chefs across all sectors of our wonderful industry.
More than 650 excited chefs and caterers were all waiting to see who wins what award, with the coveted Special Award being presented to someone very close to our hearts in Cyrus Todiwala. This man has time for everyone; he is inspirational, a true talent, and a damn fine chef all rolled into one.

The evening kicked off with our very own Martin Bates picking up an award for all the great work that he does and his involvement with the Craft Guild. Martin works tirelessly all year round, and it gave me immense pleasure in presenting him with the now famous Craft Guild jacket. Well done Martin from all of us at the Guild.

As ever the evening never just happens so a big thanks to David, Steve, Jo and her team, for making it just what it is today. Plans are already afoot for the big 20th anniversary awards being held on June 10 2013 at The Grosvenor House, so get booking!

Exciting events are being planned for later on in the year, and our first food festival is taking place on Wednesday, September 12, at Painshill Park in Cobham, Surrey, which will be like no other. We are planning for you to meet the growers, foraging tours around the site, look at fresh crayfish being caught, and to really get down to nature. This is not going to be some indoor based stuffy event, but a get-down-into-the-woods event, so dust off those wellies and book a place.

In August we are planning a family fun day where we are looking at bringing everyone together, with lots of activities planned for all ages, as we thought it time for us to open up a day for a relaxed informal gathering where we can all have fun.

We had our first Spring Ball for many years, which although was attended by less than we hoped, a most fantastic evening was enjoyed, with music being played well into the night, wine being drunk, great food being eaten, and again the chance for everyone to get together in a more relaxed informal manner. Dennis Mwakulua and his team did a great job in setting up this evening and already plans are going ahead for next year’s event. If there is any type of social event that you would like to see planned, please contact him direct.

In April we had our AGM and a chance to reward many people and companies who have done so much for the Guild over the past year or, for many, even longer. It also means that I have started my third and final year as your chairman, and I find it my privilege to lead the largest and most successful chef association around.

The success that we enjoy is based on our membership and all the hard work that the Committee of Management, along with Trustees and Vice Presidents’ Council put in over the year, and for that I thank you.

I look forward to seeing and meeting many of you over the coming months, so keep cooking!

Andrew Green
